GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS
Artist Krijn Christiaansen created a light artwork for the outer wall of the Noorderstation in 2006 that consists of twenty-six fluorescent tubes. Originally the lamps reacted to the moving trains - the light moved with the train. The artwork was given new life with LED lighting in 2019 with Acclaim Flex Tube Pixel.
Realization
The light artwork was at the time an initiative of the residents of the Selwerderwijk and was realized as part of the municipal project "Clean, Heel, Safe", in which the Municipality of Groningen, together with the regional police and residents, is working on a livable city. For years, the station was experienced as an unpleasant location. In recent years, all kinds of adjustments have given the station a more positive interpretation. For example, the former station staircases have been converted into studios for artists.
